How does a joint work?
A joint works above all through the THC it contains, which is psychoactive and, when smoking, sets in within seconds to minutes. Typical are relaxation, an altered perception and increased appetite, often accompanied by a dry mouth and reddened eyes. How strong the high turns out depends on the strain, THC content, dose and daily form and varies from person to person.

1. Definition of the joint and how the blunt differs from the spliff
By now an incredible number of terms are in circulation, all of which in the end describe the same thing, right? A mostly hand-rolled "cigarette" that consists, at least in part, of finely ground cannabis. Rolled in a thin paper and combined with a twisted TIP or an activated carbon filter, "it" represents the most widespread form of cannabis consumption in the world. The joint!
Depending on region and culture, the joint has by now been given many names, so it is not uncommon to also call it "Tüte", "Dübel" or "Torpedo". They define the umbrella term and are merely synonyms in the respective slang. The blunt, however, is probably the most common variant of the joint. Especially widespread in the USA, it is typically smoked in a dedicated tobacco paper and uses no filter or mouthpiece at all. What Americans hardly ever use is the sub-type of the joint that we here in Europe clearly prefer. The spliff! This is a joint with a mixing ratio of roughly 50 % tobacco and 50 % marijuana. It is usually smoked with a paper filter or mouthpiece.
Renegade Piranha, Snoop Dogg's official blunt roller, recently reported that he sometimes smokes up to 150 blunts a day.
Which joint is the right one for you, you'll find out in detail in our article "What is a joint?".
2. The colourful history of the joint and a hopeful outlook
Every story begins somewhere. Did you know, for example, that the story of cannabis and thus also that of the joint is directly linked to that of Christopher Columbus? In 1492 he was in fact the first person to bring cannabis seeds from Cuba to America. So a historic drug smuggler?
Not quite. These seeds were used mainly to grow industrial hemp, which served, for instance, to make ropes or to extract hemp oil. Other accounts, however, assume that even back then the calming effect of THC and CBD cannabis after smoking was known and practised. Later passed through the hands of the hippie movement, the joint gained new prestige. But it will probably still take a few years before it becomes socially acceptable. Or won't it?
What Columbus evidently already appreciated back then is probably more popular with us today than ever. According to a study from 2014/15, American students now smoke more marijuana than tobacco.
Historians, this way. What's behind it and where does the journey lead? The whole history of the joint.
3. To the perfect joint in 7 easy steps
But how do you actually roll the perfect joint now? You're surely already incredibly excited about finally holding your very own self-built joint in your hands. So let's get started.
Preparation is half the battle
Get ready everything you'll need going forward. This includes a grinder, rolling papers, a Medusafilter and of course your cannabis.
Grinding the weed
To do so, place it in the cutting chamber of your grinder. Close it again and gently start turning it alternately in both directions. The finer your hemp plant, the better.
Putting the weed and the filter into the paper
Place the filter at your preferred outer edge, the cannabis in front of it. Make sure it is evenly distributed. Make sure that the glue strip is at the top and facing inwards!
This is how you roll the perfect joint
Pick up the joint kit and start rolling it between your thumb and index finger so that the cannabis begins to roll and forms a kind of sausage.
This is how you lick and seal the joint correctly
Now lick the glue strip. Sometimes less is more! Then roll the paper in and wrap it into a cone-shaped joint.
Packing and sealing
Pack your herb mix gently and with the help of a packing tool (in the bong lighter), then twist the excess paper and thus seal your joint.
Oops! Anyone who counted correctly only gets to 6 steps here. Did you notice? The perhaps most important step, as well as detailed explanations, you'll get in our "Rolling the perfect joint with these 7 easy steps" blog post.
4. How do you smoke a joint? Influencing the effect
You're surely thinking now "light it and off we go". But hold on!
To make your perfect first or next smoking experience possible, you should urgently take our tips to heart beforehand. Some factors do play a decisive role in cannabis consumption. The place where you smoke has just as much influence as the people you surround yourself with while doing so. Enough to drink close at hand? And no, by that I don't mean alcohol. Mixed consumption can intensify the psychoactive effect of the hemp and not infrequently leads to a racing heart, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. Side effects one would happily do without.

What else you should keep in mind and what the perfect dosing is all about, so you can make your experience unforgettable, you'll find out here in our article.
5. How long does the effect last, so how long are you high?
The intoxicating effect of cannabis (high) can turn out completely differently, but why is that? The high depends, on the one hand, on the active substance in the hemp. Here you first have to distinguish between CBD and THC. While the THC content is proven to be responsible for the psychoactive effects and is consumed for this purpose, cannabis with a high CBD proportion tends to have a calming effect. As a rule, the more cannabinoids the plant has, the more potent it is. In addition, the dose smoked is clearly decisive in answering this question.
How long you are high also depends on the following factors:
- The type of consumption (with edibles the effect sets in with a delay, but often more strongly than is the case when smoking)
→ With oral consumption the effect often only appears after 2 to 3 hours, whereas when inhaling cannabis it only takes seconds to minutes.
- Which strain is consumed. Strains that contain a lot of the active substance THC often also make you high longer and more strongly.
- Your body's own preferences and your general condition should also be taken into account.
How does a joint affect body and mind?
A joint works via the cannabinoids of the hemp plant: THC triggers the psychoactive high, CBD tends to have a balancing effect and dampens it.
When smoking, the active substances pass quickly into the blood via the lungs, which is why the effect is usually already noticeable after a few seconds to minutes. On the physical side, a dry mouth, reddened eyes, increased appetite and a certain heaviness in the limbs often appear. On the mental side, consumers report relaxation, an altered perception of time and music as well as a relaxed mood. How strongly and in which direction a joint works depends heavily on the strain: THC-focused strains work more intensely and often with a body focus, CBD-rich strains considerably milder. Dose, experience as well as set and setting also play a role. The effect is thus individual and can never be predicted exactly, and beginners in particular often react more sensitively.
What is a joint and what is it made of?
A joint is a self-rolled cigarette made of thin paper, filled with ground cannabis and usually with a filter at the mouthpiece.
Unlike a tobacco cigarette, a joint is rolled by hand and consists of three building blocks: the paper, the filter or tip at the mouthpiece and the ground plant material. For the body, thin Longpapers in King Size Slim format are suitable, because they burn calmly and offer enough length for clean rolling. The filter stabilises the joint and prevents loose crumbs from slipping into the mouth; a 6 mm activated carbon filter additionally cools the draw and filters out some of the particles. The material is ground most evenly with a grinder like the Aluminium Spike Grinder. From the blunt (tobacco leaf) and spliff (mixed with tobacco), the classic joint differs in that it does without tobacco. You don't need more than that for the basic equipment.
How does a joint feel for beginners?
For beginners the effect often turns out stronger than expected, because experience and tolerance are still lacking, which is why it applies: start slowly and wait.
Whoever smokes a joint for the first time usually feels the effect as a slight light-headedness, relaxation and an altered perception. Because the effect sets in quickly when inhaling, it makes sense to start with one to two puffs and wait a few minutes instead of continuing to smoke right away. Typical accompanying symptoms are a dry mouth, appetite, reddened eyes and sometimes slight dizziness or tiredness. Coughing at the beginning is normal and settles with smaller puffs. Do not combine consumption with alcohol, as this can intensify nausea and circulation problems. Most pleasant is a calm, familiar environment in which you feel comfortable. If something becomes too much for you, it helps to sit down, breathe calmly and wait, because the effect fades by itself over time. Consumption is intended exclusively for adults.
Does the filter influence the effect and the draw?
An activated carbon filter does not change the actual effect, but makes the draw cooler, smoother and filters out some of the particles.
The high arises from the cannabinoids absorbed, and a filter does not lower the THC content noticeably, so it is not a way to weaken the effect. What a filter changes is the smoking experience: a simple cardboard tip only stabilises the mouthpiece, whereas a 6 mm activated carbon filter cools the smoke on its way through the activated carbon and holds back some of the particles and suspended matter. The result is a noticeably smoother, cooler draw that scratches less, which is pleasant especially for beginners. Important for context: smoking remains smoking, and even a filter does not make a joint harmless or healthy. It merely ensures that the draw tastes cleaner and milder. Whoever values a smooth draw experience combines thin longpapers with an activated carbon filter and evenly ground material.
Is a joint legal in Germany?
Since 1 April 2024, the possession of cannabis for adults in Germany has been partly permitted under the Consumer Cannabis Act (KCanG). This is not legal advice.
Under the KCanG, adults (as of 2026) may, roughly oriented, possess up to 25 grams when out and about and up to 50 grams at home as well as grow up to three plants for personal use. For consumption in public, distance rules apply, for instance near schools, day-care centres and sports facilities. Sale and passing on outside the legally regulated channels are not permitted. The rules can change and are interpreted differently in detail, so inform yourself about the current legal situation in your area before consumption. Accessories such as papers, filters and grinders are freely available and serve the legal personal use by adults. Consumption and cultivation are intended exclusively within the legally permissible framework and only for adults.
Further factors that can influence the effect and how they interact in the end, or how you can actively shorten your high, you'll find out in our post "How long does the high last?".
6. How do you roll a tulip joint?
As quickly as it "grows", just as quickly it's gone again. But who can blame you? This joint not only looks very close to nature, it also smokes wonderfully. How you can recreate this Amsterdam classic quite easily, you'll find out from us.
Building the funnel for your tulip
Form a larger square from at least 2 long papers glued together and fold it over once so that you get a triangle. Leave the upper glued edge exposed. Moisten it and fold it over so that you get a closed triangle, which you can now open out into a funnel. Fill this with your favourite mix, making sure you can still twist it shut well afterwards.
Building the (best) stem for your tulip
For this you can either use a longer tube, or a classic joint that you build as long, thin and firm as possible. In our example we use a tube, as this usually ensures more stability.
The marriage between funnel and stem
Insert the joint into your funnel with the opening first and wrap the rest of the funnel paper around it. Using the remaining glue strips, fix the joint firmly to the bud. With a few glue strips from other papers you attach the two components to each other by pressing them firmly together at the point where funnel and joint meet.
That was too fast? Then we've summed up here once again in full detail how you get to your perfect tulip.
7. How do you roll a cross joint?
Let's continue with a very special joint variant. The cross joint. In 5 easy steps we'll show you the secrets behind it and bring you to your goal with ease.
Create the foundation
With 2 standard joints. Note that one of the two should be significantly smaller than the other. The smaller of the two should be built without a filter, while the larger one may taper conically and become wider towards the tip.
Pierce a hole
Into the larger of the two joints, so you can later "cross" the two. You best do this with a toothpick, which you first pierce through in the upper third and then gently start to rotate. Through the rotation you enlarge the hole until the diameter of the small joint fits through.
Another hole is needed
In the smaller joint! Here pierce all the way through the middle once with the toothpick. This later guarantees you the perfect draw and makes your cross joint smokable.
The marriage
Between the two! For this you push the smaller joint, with the hole, vertically into the main joint. Air has to be able to flow through here later. Be especially careful and twist it in gently so that air can flow through later.
The finishing touch
Finally, insulate the spots of the junction that remained open with glue strips from other papers. Here too, particular caution is once again required!
Done! It only remains for me to wish you lots of enjoyment while smoking your cross joint. For the best experience we recommend Medusafilters slim violet.
You'll also find the detailed guide to building your perfect cross joint here.
The longest joint ever built, by the way, is an impressive 50.6 m long and was built in 2019 by Ignacio Rodrigues and around 20 helpers. Back then it could be seen at the Mary Jane trade fair in Berlin.
8. How do you roll a windmill joint?
Welcome to the supreme discipline of joint building. I hope you have your crafting skills from days gone by on call and a crown at the ready. Because you'll have thoroughly earned it after this step-by-step guide to the perfect windmill joint. This is, for now, the last post on this blog. So it only remains for me to say one thing: thanks for being and staying curious. We'll read each other again soon, until then: stay active!
For the later operation of your windmill you'll need 4 joints without a filter. You may go ahead and prepare these already. If you don't know how to roll them, then I advise you to read our blog post on "To the perfect joint in 7 steps" beforehand.
We have to craft a casing
In the first step, roll sufficiently firm cardboard paper into a conically tapering "joint" and glue the overlaps. Sticky tape works best here. The size of the casing is irrelevant, it should just be able to be sealed in the end with endless papers from "Medusafilters".
The wrapping
Place said endless papers at the upper end of your casing so that they go all the way around it once and glue them to the cardboard paper using the glue strip. Make sure that about 50 % of the paper protrudes above the upper edge. This will be important later for the sealing.
Every good casing needs holes
Using a pointed object, pierce 2 opposite holes into the upper third of your casing. These should roughly match the diameter of your joints. Be careful here!
Casings for the casing
Still got all your fingers? Very good! Then craft yourself 2 more casings, this time however in the diameter of your holes and in the length of twice the diameter of the large casing at its thickest point. Turns out maths was good for something after all. Yiiihaaa
Marriage, the first
Now cut out the middle third of both small casings halfway, so that they would fit onto each other as a "rotor". Then push them one after the other into the large casing, so that they interlock in the middle. You can help a little from above here.
Marriage, the second
Almost done, promise. In the last step you twist the excess paper together in the middle and thus seal your casing. To fix it, you ideally use a piece of dental floss, which you wrap once around the paper closure and tie tight. A triple fisherman's knot should do the trick here. Joints in, done! Fireee
Full wind power ahead. You'll find the detailed building instructions here.
Try them now and never want to miss them again: our best!
Is this legal in Germany? (As of 2026)
In Germany, cannabis has been legal for adults within clear limits since the Consumer Cannabis Act (KCanG) of 1 April 2024 – unchanged as of 2026. The most important key points:
- Possession: up to 25 g when out and about, up to 50 g at the place of residence.
- Home cultivation: up to 3 plants per adult person, protected from access by minors.
- Consumption bans: not within sight of schools, children's and youth facilities, playgrounds and sports facilities.
- Passing on & sale remain prohibited.
This is a general classification and not legal advice. For accessories such as filters, papers or grinders these limits do not apply – smoking accessories are freely available.
Frequently asked questions about the effect of joints
A joint works mainly through the THC of the hemp plant, which is psychoactive. When smoking, the effect sets in after a few seconds to minutes. Typical are relaxation, an altered perception and appetite, often with a dry mouth and reddened eyes. How strong the high turns out depends on the strain, THC content, dose and daily form and varies from person to person.
When smoking, the active substances pass quickly into the blood via the lungs, which is why the effect usually sets in within seconds to a few minutes and reaches its peak after a short time. Unlike with edibles, which only take effect after one to three hours, when inhaling you therefore feel something almost immediately. As a beginner, wait after the first puffs before you have more.
A joint is rolled from thin paper and contains only ground cannabis. A spliff is basically a joint with tobacco additionally mixed in. A blunt is rolled not in paper but in a tobacco leaf or a blunt wrap and is usually thicker. The classic joint thus does without tobacco and can be drawn cleanly with a filter at the mouthpiece.
For a clean joint you need three things: thin Longpapers King Size Slim, a filter and a grinder. A 6 mm activated carbon filter ensures a cooler, filtered draw, and an Aluminium Spike Grinder grinds the material evenly. With this trio you roll more evenly and draw noticeably smoother.
No, an activated carbon filter does not weaken the effect noticeably, because it barely changes the THC content. It affects the smoking experience: the 6 mm filter cools the smoke and holds back some of the particles, so that the draw becomes smoother and less scratchy. But a filter does not make smoking harmless or healthy, it only improves the taste and the feel of the draw.
